On a worldwide basis, BBC News aims to capture the attention of older people with their news stories. Especially considering that as of 2014, about half of BBC News TV viewers in the UK are over the age of 60.
However, with social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, BBC News has started to gain a younger audience. Their global audience recently reached 348 million as of April 2016. Social media is the way to go nowadays when it comes to gaining followers and spreading the word about specific content. I started following ‘BBC News (World)’ so I can easily keep up with updates, breaking news, and how BBC uses rhetoric to catch their audience’s eyes in their short headlines.
So I’d say their current intended audience is anyone between the ages of 13 to anything over 60.
I chose to follow ‘BBC News (World)’ because this way I can get one of the most broad sources and pick and choose what types of articles I want to analyze. Also I can see their take on events close to me as well as in different parts of the world. I may, however, still analyze articles from 'BBC UK' or 'BBC Sports'.
I know that this is their intended audience because it uses things that today’s young people understand in its headlines, such as hashtags, as well as simple and to-the-point headlines that older people can understand right away.
